![]() ![]() Lots of local people who have lived in or near Galveston County for a few generations can still recount to you how their grandparents were involved. When it was cool enough to handle, my grandfather picked it up and kept it as a souvenir, and he later gave it to my father, who passed it on to my brother. Grandcamp landed not far from their house. They fortunately lived far enough away that they weren't directly affected beyond having their windows blown out (like many for miles around), and a red-hot chunk of fist-sized shrapnel from the S.S. I picked up this book because I grew up next door to Texas City, and my grandparents and father, then a boy of six, lived there in 1947 when the disaster occurred, and they would never forget it for the rest of their lives. It's not a story that gets told a lot these days, particularly if you don't live on the Texas Gulf Coast. Ever heard of the Texas City Disaster? No? I'm not surprised. ![]()
